Volunteer Update

To all staff

I just wanted to update everyone about the amount of volunteering which has been undertaken by our young people. Between August 2012 and June 2013 the total amount of volunteer hours has exceeded 4,000 hours which is a phenomenal amount for one school. This total includes volunteering in and out of school in a variety of ways for numerous charitable organisations and institutions by St John’s pupils from S1 right through to S6.

St John’s should also be very proud that three of our S6 girls were chosen to act as Saltire Ambassadors for the City of Dundee:  Aniqa Aslam; Katherine Coyle and Marie-Louise Dougan. This was such an achievement for all three as there are only five ambassadors in Dundee which means St John’s has made a significantly important contribution to Saltire both locally and nationally. The three girls accumulated over 200 hours volunteering each and on December 17th 2012 were awarded the third part of their Ascent award by Joe Fitzpatrick MSP at a ceremony in the Hall along with other senior pupils who also received awards.

As a result of this contribution Aniqa Aslam, who volunteered over 350 hours alone, gained an invitation to attend an awards evening at Edinburgh Castle hosted by the First Minister Alex Salmond in June 2013. This was to recognise the good work that young people all over Scotland do throughout the year and Aniqa thoroughly deserves this recognition.

Furthermore, I would like to thank all the staff who allowed our seniors to volunteer time in the various departments. Mr Flynn, PT Art, Mr Graves, PT ASN ; Miss Keegan ASN;  Mr Curran PT PE and Mrs McDonald, HE  all had pupils volunteering time to S1 Art classes; ASN lunchtime football club; paired reading, ASN support, S1 support in HE and ASN buddying. The pupils all received Saltire Awards for their efforts.

Finally I would like to remind staff, especially PTs that new S6 pupils may be looking to volunteer their time within Departments and if you could accommodate them I would be most grateful.
