St John’s RC High School Business & Languages event (Thursday 16 January 2020)

St John’s RC High School Business & Languages event (Thursday 16 January 2020)

Andrew Gillespie – Ace Aquatec

This year’s business and language event consisted of a range of local businesses and organisations who delivered 25-minute interactive workshops to our current S3 pupils.

Pupils were split into groups and rotated through each of the workshops delivered by the organisations.  The intention of this experience was to enable young people to make links between the Business and languages subjects which they are studying, and to recognise the relevance of the skills which they are learning.  This enabling young people to make links between the work they are doing in school and its purpose in their future careers.

Attending the talks and workshops enabled young people to develop a range of skills which will be essential for their future, including literacy, team working and interpersonal skills, as well as languages and business skills.

Pupil feedback on the morning was extremely positive, overall, they found the whole experience valuable and thoroughly enjoyed working alongside local businesses.  The workshops put their leaning into context and gave them a greater awareness of the importance of studying a language alongside business and clear links to their future careers.

George R Donald Schools Enterprise Challenge

The George Donald Schools Challenge creates a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to work with our young people, helping to ignite their passion for business and enterprise.

This year’s event took place on 31 October at Michelin Athletic Club, where 12 teams from various Dundee and Angus Secondary Schools tackled a live business challenge in a competitive environment and up against tight deadlines!

This year’s challenge was to come up with a business idea for a circular economy business.  Our team had to design 2 posters containing specified information, they were then asked to make a short presentation to a panel of judges representing the Chamber of Commerce GR Donald Fund.

We received support throughout the event from our local business mentor, Corah Edgar from Blackadders Solicitors

The winning team were Arbroath High School with their shell recycling scheme.  Despite not winning overall, the 4 participants from St John’s RC High School had a fantastic business idea, worked exceptionally well as a team and really enjoyed the experience.

In September a group of business education students attended the Future Asset Conference in Edinburgh, this event was targeted towards S5 girls across Scotland, aiming to underline the fact that gender should never be seen as a barrier to progressing in whatever career you choose.

Our S5 girls who attended the event demonstrated their interpersonal skills, thinking outside the box, resilience, problem solving and inquiry skills.

There were talks, workshops and interactive experiences with successful, inspirational speakers from a range of careers and professions.  These included Jayne-Anne Gadhia (CEO of Virgin Money), Nicola Sturgeon (First Minister of Scotland) and Ross Jennings, (The First Piper) who is a Guinness World Record holding adventurer!
