Higher Business Management

Course Aims

The Course aims to enable learners to develop and extend:

  • knowledge and understanding of the ways in which society relies on business to satisfy our needs
  • an understanding of a range of methods businesses use to ensure customers’ needs are met
  •  understanding of enterprising skills and attributes by providing them with opportunities to study relatively complex business issues
  • understanding of business-related financial matters
  • an understanding of the ways businesses can use resources to achieve maximum efficiency
  • an understanding of the steps taken by business to improve overall performance and effectiveness
  • knowledge and understanding of the main effects that external influences, such as economic impact and sustainability, have on organisations

Course Contents

Understanding Business

The general aim of this Unit is to enhance learners’ understanding of the features and characteristics of large business organisations. It will further develop the skills, knowledge and understanding by carrying out activities relating to the operation of large business organisations including those that operate globally. The Unit will allow learners to explore in depth issues relating to the internal and external environment in which larger organisations operate and the effect this can have on decision making and profitability.

Learners who complete this Unit will be able to:

1 Analyse the features, objectives and internal structures of large business organisations.

2 Analyse the environment in which large organisations operate.

Management of Marketing and Operations

The general aim of this Unit is to enhance learners’ understanding of the management of marketing and operations within large organisations. The Unit will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to make decisions about how to manage these activities effectively. In doing so, the Unit is designed to enhance the employability of learners by enabling them to carry out activities that will contribute to organisational success.

Learners who complete this Unit will be able to:

1 Apply knowledge and understanding of how the marketing function enhances the effectiveness of large organisations.

2 Apply knowledge and understanding of how the operations function contributes to the success of large organisations.

Management of People and Finance

The general aim of this Unit is to enhance learners’ understanding of the management of people and finance within large organisations. The Unit will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding required to make decisions about how to manage these resources effectively. In doing so, the Unit is designed to enhance the employability of learners by enabling them to carry out activities that will contribute to organisational success.

Learners who complete this Unit will be able to:

1 Apply knowledge and understanding of how the management of people can meet the objectives of large organisations.

2 Analyse how the management of finance contributes to the effectiveness of large organisations.

Entry Requirements

Pupils should have either National 5 Business Management or Intermediate 2 Business Management or the component units of Intermediate 2 Business Management - Business Enterprise (Int 2) or Business Decision Areas (Int 2).  Also recommended is National 5 English.

Progression

This Course or its Units may provide progression to Advanced Higher Business Management, further and higher education courses in business or training or employment in the business sector.
