S3 Geography – Will the lights stay on?


This unit considers the various sources of energy used in the UK to supply homes and businesses with light and heat, and the options available to us as fossil fuels gradually run out.

To know all the sources of energy used to produce electricity and to understand the terms renewable and non-renewable.

  • To realise the continuing importance of coal as an energy source.

  • To understand the importance of the oil and gas industry to the economy and to realise that they will soon run out.

  • To be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy.

  • To know the advantages and limitations of wind power and other sources of renewable energy such as solar, wave, tidal, geothermal and biomass.
