Reading for Pleasure

Dundee Inter-schools Literary Competition

Every year S2 pupils from across Dundee come together for a fun-filled morning of quick-fire questions ranging from popular fiction to classics. There is a whole round dedicated to the Chidren's Laureate. In November 2015 St John's were the winners.

Book Awards

The Librarian encourages pupils to take part in various book awards, including Scottish Book Trust Children’s Book Award and the Redhouse Children’s Book Award. Pupils can contribute to choosing the shortlist or just take part in reading the final shortlist.

In June 2016 two of our S4 pupils had the privilege of co-hosting the Scottish Children's Book Awards ceremony at The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow. Ebele and James lead the discussion on stage between the shortlisted authors. Thre was a fantastic opportunity after the main event for both pupils to meet the authors, their publishers and agents.

Book Clubs

The Book Club is still going strong and meet every week in the Library on a Tuesday evening after school. 3.40pm - 4.15pm. We have lots of fun, take part in quizzes, design posters and take part in competitions. We celebrate special literary days, for example, Roald Dahl Day, World Book Day, Scottish Book Week and Harry Potter Night.

The Manga Club is on a Wednesday evening in the Library from 3.40pm-4.15pm and is proving to be more popular than ever. They are a very creative bunch and produce some fantastic drawings.
